How is silk made?
Do you know how silk is made? Here is the process for creating our silk products.
1. Create silk yarns
We rear silkworms, and they spin cocoons. Dry and boil cocoons to loosen them, then reel silk off cocoons. Utukky’s silk is made of cocoons in Jiangxi Province, China.
2. Create silk
Spin yarns and boil off to generate a glossy and smooth texture.
3. Turn silk into products
Dye silk in various colors and produce silk products. Utukky’s silk products are made in Jiangxi Province, China.
4. Distribute products via shops
Utukky and our partner factories conduct quality inspections and ship products.
What makes Utukky’s silk special
Utukky’s products are made of high-quality, 6A class of silk, which is commonly used by high-end brands. It has 25 momme thickness and you can touch and feel the richness. (Some products are made of silk with a thickness of 19 or 22 momme.)
About rank of silk
About 80~90% of silk products around the world are produced in China. The quality of each silk substantially varies.
There is a ranking system to assess the quality of silk, determined by the consistency of yarns, purity, amount of fluff, strength, and stretchiness. Each silk is categorized into 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, or 6A, and 6A is the highest rank.
Benefits of silk
1. Luxurious and smooth feel, glossy color
Silk yarns contain a protein called fibroin. Since the cross section of fibroin is prismatic, it generates diffused light and makes silk look glossy just like a pearl.
2. Skin friendly
Silk is composed of protein like human skin, with excellent moisture absorption and moisture dissipation, making it perfect for people with atopic skin and sensitive skin.
3. Moisture absorption, moisture wicking, breathability
Silk is said to be a “skin panacea” to keep your skin moisturized while you sleep, and also prevent stains and wrinkles. In addition, silk fiber is a fine and porous structure that can contain a lot of air, so it protects your hair and skin from the cold while you sleep and is great for all seasons!
4. Anti-static
Silk fiber is covered with natural moisturizing ingredients sericin, which prevents static electricity. It is resistant to dust causing allergies and has excellent antibacterial properties, so you can use them with peace of mind.
5. Protection from UV rays
It is well-known that the basic beauty of skin is to protect skin from UV rays. The cocoons, the material of silk, have the ability to protect silkworms from UV rays damage. Therefore, silk absorbs about 90 % of UV rays and protects our skin.
Cautionary points
1. Discolored by UV rays
Please dry silk in the shade after washing so that you can protect silk from being discolored by UV rays.
2. Sensitive to friction
Any friction in wet conditions makes silk frayed and whitish. Please gently press by hands when washing.
3. Insect damage
If you leave silk in your drawers for a long time, wrap it in non-woven fabric and store it with a dehumidifying agent and an insect repellent.
